Sokolatopita: A Traditional Greek Chocolate Cake Recipe

Sokolatopita is a delicious Greek chocolate pie. This sokolatopita recipe takes around 50 mins to prepare and 25-30 mins to cook. This dessert is ideal for any time of the year and for any special occasion including Christmas of course. Actually, you wouldn’t describe it as a pie in the traditional definition of the term, but have in mind that Greeks like to call a pie many different dishes. Sokolatopita Recipe – Ingredients

  • 340 g of couverture chocolate
  • 150 g of butter
  • 1 teacup of sugar
  • 1 teacup of blanched almonds, grated
  • 5 eggs
  • 50 g of sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • Chocolate syrup or powdered sugar for topping

Sokolatopita Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this sokolatopita recipe by crushing the couverture chocolate into small pieces.
  2. Melt it into bain-marie with the butter.
  3. Once melted, remove from heat and add the sesame oil.
  4. Take a mixer bowl. Add the eggs with sugar. Mix well until sugar is dissolved and you get a fluffy mixture.
  5. In a bowl, mix the blanched almonds with the baking powder.
  6. Mix the egg mixture with the chocolate couverture mixture and mix well.
  7. Add the grated blanched almonds.
  8. Take a spatula and mix the ingredients well until the mixture is unified.
  9. Take a non-stick oven pan and lightly grease it with butter.
  10. Even pour the mixture. Make sure the width of the mixture does not exceed a finger.
  11. Bake the sokolatopita at 350° F for about 25 minutes until the surface of the chocolate pie is baked. Inside, the chocolate should not dry from baking and should remain somehow wet.
  12. Remove the Greek chocolate cake from the pan. You may want to cut it into small pieces.
  13. Serve lukewarm or cold
  14. Top sokolatopita with chocolate syrup or powdered sugar (optional).
