Keftedes: Traditional Greek Meatballs Recipe

 Keftedes (κεφτέδες) is the name of the traditional Greek meatballs. You can cook keftedes by frying, baking, steaming, or even braising in sauce. In this authentic recipe, you cook them by frying. Greeks usually use ground meat to make keftedes. However, you can combine ground beef with ground pork if you like to. 

This Greek meatball recipe requires the following ingredients: ground beef, red onion, garlic clove, breadcrumbs, egg, parsley, spearmint, Greek olive oil, dried oregano, oil for frying, flour, salt, and pepper.

Keftedes – Ingredients

  • 700g of ground beef
  • 1 large red onion, grated
  • 1 clove of garlic, minced
  • 1 cup of breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 of a cup chopped fresh parsley
  • 4 leaves of fresh spearmint (chopped)
  • 2 tbsps. of Greek olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • Salt and pepper
  • oil for frying
  • Flour for dredging

Keftedes – How to Make

  1. Start this Greek meatballs recipe by adding all the ingredients into a large bowl. 
  2. With your hands mix well the ingredients for about 5-10 minutes until you get a homogeneous mixture, and all flavors are blended.
  3. Take a plastic wrap and let the keftedes mixture rest in the fridge for about an hour.
  4. After one hour take the keftedes mixture out of the fridge.
  5. Take a deep-frying pan, add the frying oil, and bring to boil over medium temperature.   
  6. Take a plate and place some absorbent paper. 
  7. With the help of your hands, form the keftedes at the size of a walnut.
  8. Dredge each meatball in the flour making sure to shake off any excess flour.
  9. Fry the keftedes in batches depending on the size of the frying pan until nicely browned on all sides.
  10. Once ready place the keftedes on the plate so the oil is absorbed. 
  11. Serve.
If you want a healthier version of this Greek meatball recipe, you can bake the keftedes instead of frying them. The only different thing you need to do is take a baking pan and cover it with some greased baking paper. Then, preheat the oven at 200C, place the keftedes on the baking pan about an inch apart and bake for about 20 minutes, making sure to turn the keftedes through the cooking time so they are evenly baked.
