Soutzoukakia Recipe: Traditional Greek Meatballs in Tomato Sauce

Soutzoukia is traditional Greek meatballs in tomato sauce full of totally satisfying flavors! This soutzoukakia recipe, which yields a fantastic result, comes from the Greeks of Minor Asia. As a dish, it became popular in Greece in the 1920’s when Greeks were forced to abandon Minor Asia, a place in which they lived for thousands of years. Because of their origin, you may also find them by the name soutzoukakia smyrneika.

The word soutzoukakia (σουτζουκάκια in Greek) originates from the word Sucuk which in Turkish means sausage. To make the connection, these delicious delights have a long shape which resembles a small sausage! Ideal for any time of the year, to cook soutzoukakia you need ground beef, garlic clove, old bread, red wine, egg, Greek olive oil, tomatoes, cumin, salt, pepper, and sugar. This soutzoukakia recipe, which serves 6 persons, takes 30 minutes to prepare and 50 minutes to cook. These Greek meatballs in tomato sauce are delicious with rice!


Soutzoukakia Recipe – Ingredients

  • 1 kg of ground beef
  • One garlic clove, melted
  • 3 slices of old bread
  • 1/2 teacup of red wine
  • 1 egg
  • Pepper
  • Cumin
  • 1 teacup of Greek olive oil
  • Salt
  • Sugar (for the tomato sauce)

Soutzoukakia Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this soutzoukakia recipe by adding the wine and some water into a large mixing bowl. In another bowl soak the bread briefly, just to wet it all the way the through. After that, squeeze the water from the bread and transfer to the large mixing bowl which contains the wine and water.
  2. Add the ground beef, garlic clove, salt, egg, pepper, and the cumin. Clean your hands very well and use them to mix the meatball ingredients together until thoroughly combined.
  3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Take a large baking pan and add the oil.
  4. With your hands roll the meat mixture into little sausage shapes, about 2 inches long. Evenly place the soutzoukakia into the baking pan. Add some water and bake for around 35 minutes.
  5. In the meantime, add olive oil to a large pot and bring to boil over medium temperature. Add the tomatoes, sugar, salt, and pepper. Cook and stir for around 8 minutes or until the tomatoes dissolve into a sauce. Reduce heat to low and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes until the tomato sauce slightly becomes thicker.
  6. Remove soutzoukakia from oven and cover them with the tomato sauce taking care not to break them. Gently stir to the meatballs in the sauce and cook for 5 minutes more over low heat.
  7. Serve while hot.
