Authentic Moussaka Recipe: A Greek Traditional Recipe

This authentic moussaka recipe has four layers that are separately cooked before being combined for the final baking: a bottom layer of sliced zucchini sautéed in olive oil; a middle layer of ground beef lightly cooked with tomato sauce, onion, and pepper. Then, you add a layer of zucchini and a top layer of Béchamel sauce. Just delicious!

The composed dish is then layered into a pan and baked until the top layer is browned. Moussaka is usually served warm. If cut hot out of the oven, moussaka squares tend to slide apart. Consequently, you need to allow this dish to firm up before serving. Reheating, however, does not present the same problem.

Authentic Moussaka Recipe – Ingredients

  • 500 grams of lean ground beef 
  • 1 kilo of zucchini
  • 1 onion, well chopped
  • 2 tablespoons of tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 100 grams of Greek cheese graviera, grated
  • 1 tablespoon of parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup of Greek olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper



Moussaka Recipe Bechamel – Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lt of fresh milk
  • 7 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of salt

Authentic Moussaka Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this traditional moussaka recipe by wash zucchini with cold fresh water.
  2. Cut zucchini in slices. Sprinkle them with salt, pepper and add flour on both sides.
  3. Take a skillet. Add some oil.
  4. Lightly fry the zucchini slices.
  5. Take a platter. Place some absorbent paper. Place the fried zucchini on the platter.
  6. Take a pot. Add the butter and onions. Allow it to simmer.
  7. Add the ground beef. Stir well.
  8. Add the tomato sauce, salt, pepper and one glass of water.
  9. Simmer for 20 minutes. Periodically stir. Allow it to cool.
  10. Take another pot. Add all the bechamel ingredients.
  11. Bring to boil. Stir well with wire whisk until it thickens.
  12. Take the pot off the oven.
  13. Take two tablespoons from the bechamel. Add it to ground beef.
  14. Preheat oven to 392° F.
  15. Add parsley to the ground beef. Stir well.
  16. Take a baking dish. Add some oil.
  17. Place half of the zucchini. Sprinkle them with some cheese.
  18. Spread over the ground beef. Add the remaining zucchini.
  19. Spread over the bechamel.
  20. Top with the remaining grated cheese. Sprinkle the remaining butter
  21. Place in the oven and bake for about 30 minutes.
  22. Allow it to slightly cool and cut into pieces.
  23. Serve.
