Skaltsounia Recipe – A Christmas Dessert

Skaltsounia is one of the easiest Greek Christmas dessert recipes. Full of delicious scents, this traditional treat will become one of your favorite ones.

My aunt used to make skaltsounia when I was a kid. However, it has been quite long since I visited my village during Christmas and I missed this favorite treat. So I decided to bake some skaltsounia for my family.

To make skaltsounia you need the following ingredients: flour, sugar, Greek olive oil, walnuts, honey, eggs, cinnamon, clove, baking powder, and powdered sugar. The combination of honey, cinnamon, and clove give to skaltsounia a terrific and distinct scent.

Making skaltsounia is easy and no cooking skills are required.


Skaltsounia – Ingredients

  • 375 ml of flour
  • 250 ml of sugar
  • 250 ml of Greek olive oil
  • 125 ml of honey
  • 250 ml of walnuts, grated
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon of clove
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of baking powder
  • 1 extra egg
  • Powdered sugar

How to make – Instructions

  1. Start this skaltsounia recipe by taking a bowl and mixing the honey with the grated walnuts, the cinnamon, and the clove.
  2. Take a blender and place the sugar with the four eggs. Mix for about 10 minutes until the sugar has dissolved.
  3. Take a big bowl and sift the flour.  Add the baking powder, pour the olive oil and the egg mixture from the blender.
  4. Stir and knead until you get a firmed dough.
  5. Dissolve the yolk of the extra egg with some water in another small bowl.
  6. Take a baking pan and cover it with some greaseproof paper. Spread it with some olive oil.
  7. With a spoon take some dough and create a thin dough sheet. Cut it with a cup or glass into round pieces and fill with a spoonful of the mixture.
  8. Fold it into half as to create a half-moon shaped dough. Place it on the baking pan and sprinkle it with the dissolved yolk.
  9. Continue the same process until the whole mixture is finished.
  10. Bake the skaltsounia in a medium oven for about 25 to 30 minutes.
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar when cool.
