Galatopita me Filo: Unveiling the Art of Crafting a Timeless Greek Milk Pie with Phyllo

Galatopita me filo is the name of the traditional Greek milk pie with phyllo recipe. This mouthwatering dessert is a spectacular dessert for every special occasion. Galatopita me filo requires the following ingredients: milk, fine semolina, sugar, vanilla extract, eggs, phyllo dough sheets, and confectionery sugar.

Many people confuse galatopita me filo with galaktoboureko. Although they are quite similar due to the creamy custard both desserts have, for galaktoboureko you use syrup.

This galatopita me filo recipe serves 12 pieces. For your reference, when I mention a cup as a measurement this equals 250 ml.

  • 1/2 cup fine semolina flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar

  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • A baking pan (ideally a 14 x 11 x 2-inch metal pan)

For Galatopita pie topping:

  • 4 tablespoons melted butter
  • 10 sheets phyllo
  • 4 tablespoons of confectionary sugar (optional)

Galatopita me filo – How to Make

  1. Start this authentic galatopita me filo recipe by preheating the oven to 200°C (400°F).
  2. Take a saucepan and add all the filling ingredients. Cook slowly over medium heat until the mixture begins to thicken. Do not let it reach a custard stage. Remove the saucepan from heat to cool.
  3. Take a baking pan and butter it well.
  4. Take a sheet of phyllo, butter it, and place it lengthwise in the pan so it hangs over one side. Repeat with three more phyllo sheets, staggering them so that the pan bottom is covered, and the phyllo hangs over the 4 sides. Place an additional phyllo sheet on the bottom of the pan.
  5. Now pour the filling inside the pan, tuck the phyllo in over the edges, brush the phyllo edges with butter.
  6. Cover the filling with the remaining phyllo dough sheets in the same way.
  7. Bake the galatopita me filo for around 20 minutes until the phyllo gets a nice golden color.
  8. Remove the milk pie from the oven and allow it to cool.
  9. Top with confectionary sugar (optional)
  10. Serve
