Of course, to complete this authentic gyros recipe you need some other basic ingredients as well. First of all, you would need some tzatziki and some pita bread. Ideally, I would suggest you prepare your own pita bread, but you can always buy them from your local Greek store. In case you prefer to buy them, try to warm them just before you serve the homemade gyros.

You can make gyros from any kind of meat but pork and chicken are the most popular ones. You need the following ingredients: pork tenderloin, onion, garlic clove, oregano, thyme, sweet paprika, white wine, Greek olive oil, salt, and pepper.

Authentic Gyros Recipe – Ingredients

  • 500 g of pork tenderloin, cut into strips.
  • 1 red onion
  • 1 garlic clove
  • 1 sweet spoon of oregano
  • 1 sweet spoon of thyme
  • 1 sweet spoon of sweet paprika
  • 100 ml of white wine
  • 2 tablespoons of Greek olive oil
  • Salt
  • Pepper

Authentic Gyros Recipe – How to Make

  1. Start this authentic pork gyros recipe by adding the onion and the garlic clove a food blender and mix well the ingredients.
  2. Take a meat pounder in order to tenderize the pork. With a sharp knife and cut the meat into 1 cm stripes.
  3. Take a deep bowl and place the meat. Add the melted onion, melted garlic, white wine and olive oil. Mix the ingredients well.
  4. Add the oregano, sweet paprika and thyme and mix well the ingredients.
  5. Finally, add salt and pepper, mix well the ingredients, cover the ball and place it in the refrigerator for at least two hours.
  6. Preheat oven to 392°F (200°C)
  7. Take a pan and cover it with some greaseproof paper. Place the marinated meat and grill for around 20-25 minutes until the meat gets a nice golden color without being dried. You can always add some water in order to avoid the meat getting dry.
You can always use a nonstick pan instead of a grill to make this homemade gyros pork recipe. In case you do, take a hot nonstick pan, add the marinated meat, and saute on each side without stirring until the meat gets a nice golden color.
