Traditional Greek Loukoumades Recipe: Greek Honey Balls

Loukoumades are traditional Greek honey balls. These pastries are made of deep fried dough soaked in honey syrup, topped with cinnamon and sometimes sprinkled with grated walnuts. This traditional Greek loukoumades recipe, ideal for any time of the day, is for around 12 persons and it takes around 90 minutes to prepare and 15 minutes to cook.

Traditional Greek Loukoumades Recipe – Ingredients

  • 3 tea cups of flour
  • 50 g of yeast
  • 1 soup spoon of sugar
  • 1 level teaspoon of salt
  • Olive oil for frying
  • 1 teacup of honey
  • 1 teacup of sugar (or equivalent stevia portion)
  • Cinnamon
  • Ground walnuts, optional

Traditional Greek Loukoumades Recipe – Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in 1 cup of lukewarm water.
  2. Add the flour in a mixer bowl.
  3. Add the dissolved yeast, the sugar, and salt along with one cup of lukewarm water.
  4. Stir the mixture until it becomes a unified and thick batter. Add 1 to 2 spoons of flour if needed.
  5. Cover the bowl and leave it in a warm place for at least 1 hour, until it doubles in size and bubbles rise to its top.
  6. Prepare the syrup by adding one cup of water in the pot along with the honey and the sugar. Bring to boil over medium temperature. Stir at the beginning until sugar and honey are dissolved. Simmer the syrup for around 5 minutes.
  7. Heat the oil. Take spoonfuls of the batter and drop them into the hot oil. Fry them for some minutes and turn the balls with a slotted spoon until they get a golden brown color. Continue this process until there is no more batter left.
  8. Take a platter and cover it with some absorbent kitchen paper.
  9. Take loukoumades out of oil with a slotted spoon and place them on the platter.
  10. Pour the honey syrup over them and sprinkle them with cinnamon.
  11. Top with coarsely ground walnuts (optional).
  12. Serve while they are warm.
