Tomatokeftedes: Greek Traditional Tomato Fritters

Tomatokeftedes is the name of the Greek traditional tomato fritters. Delicious and hearty, you can serve them as an appetizer or even as a main dish. To make these delicious tomato patties you need the following ingredients: tomatoes, feta cheese, onion, parsley, oregano, garlic clove, flour, baking powder, olive oil, salt, and pepper. In case you are a vegetarian, you can make them without the feta cheese.

I first tasted tomatokeftedes years ago when I visited the island of Santorini. Santorini may be the most beautiful island in the world! Words just cannot describe how stunning that place is. During our visit, my wife was pregnant and a nice lady treated us some of their local dishes. Afterall, Santorini’s distinctive terrain and unique climate produce a range of unique products. One of these products is the tomato they use to make these notorious tomatokeftedes. Years after that treat, I tried to make these delicious tomato fritters (also know as domatokeftedes).

There are many ingredients you can use in order to make tomatokeftedes. A variation of this recipe uses zucchini as well as an ingredient. This is, after all, the beauty of the Greek food. You can use your imagination and create mouthwatering gourmet paradises. This tomatokeftedes recipe is quite easy and it is worth your effort. It takes around 15 minutes to prepare and around 10 minutes to cook. It gives 12-15 pieces depending on the size you decide to give them. It is great to eat them with some Greek yogurt or tzatziki and serve them with a glass of wine.

Two tips to make these tomatokeftedes even more delicious: try to use organic tomatoes in order to get the original flavor. Finally, your tomatokeftedes will taste much better if you prepare the tomato mixture a couple of hours before cooking as this will allow the ingredients to blend better.

Tomatokeftedes – Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup of tomatoes (3-4 tomatoes), finely chopped
  • 100g feta cheese, crushed (optional)
  • 1/2 of a cup of one large red onion, grated
  • 1 tablespoon of parsley, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of fresh spearmint, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of dried oregano
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed
  • 1/2 cup of flour
  • 1 tablespoon of baking powder
  • Salt and freshly ground paper
  • Greek olive oil, for frying

Tomatokeftedes – Instructions

  1. Start making tomatokeftedes by cleaning the tomatoes well under fresh water. Allow them to dry or dry them with a paper towel.
  2. Finely chop the tomatoes and add them to a bowl.
  3. Add the feta, onion, parsley, spearmint, oregano, garlic, salt and pepper and mix well.
  4. Slowly add the flour and the baking powder while you continue mixing with a spoon. Stir until all ingredients are combined and the mixture is firm. If the mixture is not firm, add a little more flour.
  5. Cover the bowl and place in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  6. Take a pan and add the olive oil.
  7. Bring to boil over medium-high heat.
  8. Take a spoon of the tomato mixture to create a fritter. In case the tomato dough sticks on the spoon, you should dip the tablespoon in some water.
  9. Cook 2-3 minutes on each side until tomatokeftedes get a nice golden brown color.
  10. Remove and place on a plate with some paper towel in order to absorb excess oil.

I hope you like tomatokeftedes as I much as do! Stay tuned for more traditional Greek recipes. Enjoy!
