Patates Yahni: A Traditional Greek Potato Stew Recipe

Really simple to make, it is one of most delicious and complete Greek food dishes you can try! For this patates yahni recipe, I have used the most simple ingredients that you could imagine. Just potatoes, onion, tomato sauce, tomatoes and Greek olive oil! Try to use fresh tomatoes instead of canned. You can certainly make this Greek potato stew even more delicious by adding finely chopped parsley and some wine. But if you like simple tastes, I suggest you stick the ingredients below.

Patates Yahni – Ingredients

  • 6 large potatoes, washed and peeled
  • 1 big red onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 3 ripe tomatoes, peeled and grated
  • 3/4 of a cup olive oil
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp freshly ground pepper

Patates Yahni – Instructions

  1. Start this patates yahni recipe by cutting the potatoes into the shape you want.
  2. Take a pan. Add olive oil and bring to boil at medium temperature. When the oil is hot, fry the potatoes.
  3. Take a plate and cover it with absorbent paper.
  4. When potatoes get a nice golden brown color, place them on the plate.
  5. In the same pan, fry the onions in the same olive oil that you have used to fry the potatoes.
  6. When onions are fried, add the potatoes, the tomato paste once you dissolved in some water, the tomatoes, and hot water so that all ingredients are covered.
  7. Add salt and pepper.
  8. Allow to simmer over medium temperature until potatoes are softened, all liquids are absorbed and they remain in the tomato sauce.
  9. Taste to see if more salt is needed. Add to taste and lightly stir.
  10. Serve hot.
