Melopita: A Traditional Greek Honey Pie

Quite different from other desserts, melopita is a traditional Greek honey pie! This melopita recipe comes from the island of Sifnos, the motherland of Nikolaos Tselementes! Nikolaos Tselementes was the biggest Greek chef of the 20th century! As a result, food in Sifnos is absolutely delicious. This is a beautiful island that you should visit at least once if you ever come to Greece!

To prepare this Greek honey pie, you will need flour, sugar, butter, eggs, lemon juice, mizithra or ricotta cheese, honey, and cinnamon. This melopita recipe takes around 25 minutes to prepare and 45 minutes to bake. You can store melopita in a covered container in the refrigerator; but, bring to room temperature before serving. Quite similar to cheesecake, this melopita recipe serves 6 persons.

Melopita Recipe – Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cup of plain flour
  • Salt
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • 1/3 cup of butter
  • 1 egg, separated
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of cold water

Melopita filling – Ingredients

  • 500 g of mizithra or ricotta cheese
  • 1/2 cup of honey
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar
  • Salt
  • 3 Eggs
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 2 tablespoons of cinnamon




Melopita Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this melopita recipe by taking a mixing bowl and sifting the flour, salt, and sugar.
  2. Now, cut in butter with 2 knives and rub with fingertips until mixture resembles fine crumbs.
  3. In another bowl, beat the egg yolk with lemon juice and cold water. Gradually add this mixture the flour using a knife.
  4. Mix the ingredients. When dough clings together, knead lightly until smooth. Cover the bowl and allow resting for around 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat oven to 400°F (200 °C)
  6. In another bowl, beat the cheese until it becomes smooth. Gradually, beat in honey and sugar. Beat in eggs, lemon juice, and 1 teaspoon cinnamon.
  7. Roll out pastry on a lightly floured board to a 30 cm (12 inch) circle.
  8. Take a springform tin 25 cm (10 inches) and grease it with some butter. Place the pastry in the springform tin.
  9. Lightly beat egg white and brush some of this over pastry.
  10. Now, pour the cheese mixture into pastry case and smooth top.
  11. Bake in a hot oven for 15 minutes. Then, reduce to 350°F (176 °C) and bake another 30 minutes.
  12. Turn off heat and slightly open the oven door.
  13. Leave melopita in the oven until cool.
  14. Sprinkle melopita with the remaining cinnamon.
  15. Finally, cut this Greek honey pie in wedges or in traditional diamond-shaped pieces and serve.
