Kataifi Recipe: A Greek Traditional Pastry

Kataifi, along with galaktoboureko and baklava, is one of the most popular and delicious Greek traditional desserts. Golden, crispy and incredibly moist, this easy Greek dessert is made with roughly chopped walnuts and almonds scented with ground clove and cinnamon, wrapped in buttered crispy kataifi dough and bathed in scented syrup. This traditional Greek dessert recipe is absolutely delicious!

Kataifi Recipe-Ingredients

  • 450 g of kataifi dough (16 oz.)
  • 300 g of walnuts and raw almonds
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • a pinch of ground clove
  • 250 g of cow’s milk butter

Syrup Recipe-Ingredients

  • 300 g of sugar
  • 400 ml of water
  • 1 peel of lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh lemon juice
  • 2-3 ground cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of honey

Kataifi Recipe-Instructions

  1. Take a blender.
  2. Add walnuts, almonds, ground clove, and cinnamon.
  3. Pulse until walnuts and almonds are roughly chopped but not powdered.
  4. Take a pot, add the butter and melt it.
  5. Preheat oven to 180°C (350°F).
  6. Take a large baking pan (approx. 26-28cm diameter).
  7. With a cooking brush, butter bottom and sides of the baking pan.
  8. Unroll kataifi dough from package.
  9. Work dough with your hands to become fluffy.
  10. Cut a tuft from dough. Spread it out of a bench by forming a strip.
  11. Drizzle one end with melted butter. Place one teaspoon of filling at the same end.
  12. Roll it up tightly, folding inwards the sides forming a small cylinder.
  13. Place role in the pan. Brush it with melted butter.
  14. Repeat with the rest of the kataifi dough and filling. Place rolls the one next to the other, leaving no gaps between them.
  15. Drizzle with butter.
  16. Bake for about 40 min on the middle rack, or until nicely colored and crispy.
  17. Just before kataifi is ready, prepare the syrup.
  18. Take a pot. Add all syrup ingredients.
  19. Bring to boil. Stir lightly to dissolve sugar and honey. Simmer for about 10 minutes.
  20. Remove pastry from oven. Slowly pour the syrup.
  21. Cover it for a couple of hours.
  22. Serve.
