Kataifi Ekmek Recipe: Kataifi Topped with Custard and Whipped Cream

Kataifi ekmek is a delicious version of the mouthwatering traditional kataifi. Only this time the popular kataifi is topped with custard and whipped cream! This is absolutely delicious and one of most favorite Greek desserts with syrups (siropiasta). This delicious kataifi ekmek recipe is considered to be a traditional Politiki recipe and was brought to Greece by the Greeks who used to live at Konstantinoupoli. As a result, there have been a lot of debates whether this traditional dessert is Greek or Turkish. Regardless its origin, there is only one word that could describe kataifi ekmek and that word would be wonderfully mouthwatering.

I have bought kataifi ekmek many times from Greek traditional patisserie; but, nothing compares to the homemade kataifi ekmek recipe! I must admit, however, that I wouldn’t consider making kataifi ekmek easy. To be honest, I need to make it a couple more times even just to make it look beautiful. However, every mouthful is worth making it! To make this kataifi ekmek recipe you need the following ingredients: milk, sugar, yolks, flour, corn flour, butter, kataifi dough, almonds, whipping cream, and powdered sugar.

This kataifi ekmek recipe, which is also known as kataifi serai, takes 60 minutes to prepare and around 30 minutes to cook. This recipe serves around 10 persons.

Kataifi Ekmek Recipe – Ingredients

For the custard

  • 500 ml of milk
  • 4 tablespoons of sugar
  • 4 yolks
  • 3 tablespoons of flour
  • 2 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons of butter

For the kataifi

  • 300 g of kataifi dough
  • 1/2 cup of almonds, crushed
  • For the syrup
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 1/2 cup of sugar

For the topping

  • 500 ml of whipped cream
  • 2 tablespoons of powdered sugar
  • Almonds or pistachios, coarsely chopped

Kataifi Ekmek Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this kataifi ekmek recipe by first making the custard. Take a mixer’s bowl and add the yolks and sugar. Mix until sugar is dissolved and mixture becomes fluffy.
  2. Add the flour and cornstarch and continue mixing and dilute the mixture with some cold milk.
  3. Take a pot and add the remaining milk and bring to boil over medium heat. Slowly add the mixture while constantly stirring.
  4. Allow simmering until the mixture thickens. Remove from heat and add the butter. Mix well until you melt the butter and it is unified with the custard.
  5. Allow the custard to cool down before using it for the kataifi ekmek. In the meantime, stir it many times so it does not get crusty at its surface.
  6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  7. Unroll kataifi dough from package and work dough with your hands to become fluffy.
  8. Take a large baking pan (approx. 26-28cm diameter) and with a cooking brush, butter bottom and sides of the baking pan. Take the kataifi dough and evenly strew it in the baking pan packing down lightly with fingertips. Sprinkle the crushed almonds.
  9. Place baking pan in the oven and bake for around 20 minutes until it gets a nice golden color. Remove from oven and allow to cool down a little bit. Boil for around 5 minutes the syrup ingredients and pour over the lukewarm kataifi while the syrup is still hot. Cover the pan and allow the kataifi to absorb the syrup and totally cool down.
  10. Uncover the pan and with the help of a spatula spread the custard over the kataifi. Top it with the whipped cream.
  11. Sprinkle it over with the almonds or pistachios.
  12. Keep the kataifi ekmek in the refrigerator until you serve.
