Greek Orzo Recipe with Mizithra

Orzo pasta is quite popular in Greek cuisine. In our country, we call it manestra and we use it to make one of our most delicious, traditional dishes, yiouvetsi. Although, orzo is usually served as a side dish, sometimes I like to have it as a main one. My mother used to make us this quite often when I was a kid. So, it is pretty obvious why I love this Greek orzo recipe!

This rice-shaped pasta is made with semolina flour. Orzo is available at the pasta area of most supermarkets. This Greek orzo recipe is one of my kids’ favorite dishes as well. I love cooking it for many reasons. First of all, it is super easy and quick. It doesn’t take you more than 30 minutes to prepare and cook! Then, it is good not only as a side but also as a main dish. Somedays, when I have meat leftover from the previous day, orzo pasta is great to eat with it. Finally, you can be very creative with this pasta. You can make it with tomato sauce, butter or just plain. You can add feta cheese or mizithra. Just combine your taste with imagination! As you can understand this is one of my favorites Greek orzo side dish recipes! This  Greek orzo recipe is for 4 persons.

Greek Orzo Recipe with Mizithra

Greek Orzo Recipe – Ingredients

  • 500 g of orzo, uncooked
  • 1/3 cup of butter
  • 3 tablespoons of Greek mizithra cheese, grated

Greek Orzo Recipe – Instructions

  1. Cook orzo for around 14-16 minutes (follow the directions on package).
  2. Just before orzo is ready, put butter in a small saucepan.
  3. Melt butter over medium-high heat.
  4. Drain orzo in a colander. Set aside.
  5. Cook butter until it turns brown.
  6. Pour butter over orzo. Stir well.
  7. Take a serving bowl.
  8. Place hot, drained orzo in the bowl.
  9. Top with mizithra cheese.
  10. Serve right away.
