Greek New Year Cake Recipe

Welcome this New Year with this traditional Greek New Year cake recipe. Delicious and quite easy to make, you will be amazed by this vasilopita’s lightly orange flavor. In Greece, we like to cut our vasilopita when the New Year arrives. Don’t forget to insert a coin right before you bake it. Tradition says that the person who finds the coin will be healthy and lucky for the whole year.

This Greek New Year cake recipe is for around 10 to 12 persons depending on how big you cut the pieces. It will take you around 30 minutes to prepare and 50′ to 55′ to cook.

Greek New Year Cake Recipe

Greek New Year Cake Recipe – Ingredients

  • 6 big eggs
  • 2 teacups of sugar (or equivalent quantity in stevia)
  • 3/4 teacups of fresh butter
  • The zest of one orange
  • 1 wine glass of cognac
  • The juice of one big orange
  • 6 tea cups of flour
  • 3 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 washed coin wrapped in kitchen foil.

For Topping

  • Powdered sugar for the topping.
  • In case you want to create sugar glaze the following ingredients are required:
    • 500 g of sugar
    • 1/2 teacup of water
    • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Greek New Year Cake Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this Greek New Year cake recipe by separating the yolks from the egg whites.
  2. Sift the flour and mix it with the baking powder.
  3. Beat the egg whites in the mixer until you make a thick meringue.
  4. Take a mixer bowl and pour the butter with the sugar.
  5. Beat the ingredients until the mixture becomes white and fluffy. This should not take more than 10 minutes.
  6. Add the egg yolks and beat the ingredients for a while.
  7. Add the cognac and orange juice. Stir the ingredients for 3 more minutes.
  8. Slow down the intensity of the mixer. Now, alternately add flour and meringue stirring constantly until it becomes a unified mixture.
  9. Take a baking pan. Grease it well with butter and sprinkle flour over it.
  10. Pour the mixture into the pan.
  11. Place the coin in the mixture (don’t spot the position!) Alternative, you can place it on the baking pan before you pour the mixture.
  12. Bake the Greek New Year Cake at 180 degrees for 1 hour or until it browns.
  13. Remove the cake from the oven.
  14. Allow it to cool down for 5 min. Remove cake from pan. Now, allow it to totally cool down.
  15. Cover the cake with the powdered sugar.
  16. In case you want to cover the cake with the sugar glaze, here is how to make it:
    1. Put sugar in a saucepan over low heat.
    2. Add the water and stir until sugar dissolves.
    3. Allow the mixture to boil until syrup thickens.
    4. Once thickens, pour the lemon juice.
    5. Remove the sauce from heat. Put right away the pot in cold water.
    6. Once its temperature decreases, stir it well with a wooden spoon, turning its edges to the center, always in the same direction until it thickens.
    7. Take a spatula and spread it over the cake.
