Greek Chicken Souvlaki Recipe

This Greek chicken souvlaki recipe is a must try if you are interested in the Greek cuisine. I was recently abroad away from home for a couple of days. While I was on the plane returning back home, I was thinking how great it would be if a had a chicken souvlaki when I would arrive home! Souvlaki, which is skewers of meat grilled,  is one of the most popular Greek foods! If you ever visit Greece, you will be surprised by how many souvlaki stores are around. This is no surprise, however! If you ever tasted a Greek chicken souvlaki, you would agree with me that this is one of the most delicious things on earth. Even NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo was desperately looking for a souvlaki while he was in Taiwan! He knows better! Trust me.

Souvlaki is considered Greeks’ fast food. This has to do with the fact you can prepare it quickly and not with its quality which is great! If eaten without french fries, it is one of the best and healthiest Greek foods you could actually eat! To perfect this Greek chicken souvlaki recipe, eat it wrapped in a pita bread garnished with delicious traditional Greek tzatziki sauce. Tzatziki is a delicious Greek yogurt-based dip that is flavored with lemon, garlic, and crisp cucumbers. Others like to add lettuce, onions, tomato and potatoes! This is literally like heaven in your mouth because any way you decide to eat your souvlaki is splendid.

This Greek chicken souvlaki recipe is easy to follow as it doesn’t require any cooking skills. If you are looking for a traditional homemade flatbread, check out this Greek pita recipe. I like completing this Greek souvlaki recipe by serving it with some rice.

Greek Chicken Souvlaki Recipe

Greek Chicken Souvlaki Recipe – Ingredients

  • 1 kg of skinless, boneless chicken breast
  • The juice of one lemon
  • 1 teaspoon of dried oregano
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 teaspoons of Greek olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt
  • Black pepper

Greek Chicken Souvlaki Recipe – Instructions

  1. Start this Greek chicken souvlaki recipe by removing any extra fat and cleaning the chicken breasts well with fresh water. Then, cut the chicken breasts into 2 cm pieces. Put the meat aside.
  2. To make the Greek chicken souvlaki marinade, take a large bowl and add the Greek olive oil, lemon juice, minced garlic, dried oregano, salt, and pepper. Stir well the ingredients. Taste to see if any additional ingredient is needed. Add to taste.
  3. Place the chicken cubes into the bowl with the marinade. Mix the chicken cubes well. Cover the bowl and place it in the refrigerator. Allow chicken to absorb the marinade for around 60 minutes.
  4. Cut the wooden skewers in order to adjust to your grill. Ideally, you should soak the skewers as this would prevent them from burning.
  5. Now, thread the chicken cubes onto the wooden skewers. I suggest you start threading the chicken cubes at the bottom and continue up to the top of each skewer.
  6. Preheat your grill to a high heat and grill the chicken souvlaki for about 20 minutes (around 5 minutes on each side). You should turn the souvlaki occasionally so they don’t get burned.
  7. In the meantime, I suggest you prepare the pita bread. Grill them for around 1 minute each side. You may want to oil the pita bread on both sides with a cooking brush. I prefer eating them without any oil.

I hope you find this Greek chicken souvlaki recipe this delicious! Stay tuned for more traditional Greek recipes. Enjoy!
